Girls Varsity Cross Country vs. OK Gold Jamboree #2

Game Date
Sep 29, 2020

OK Gold Jamboree #2 @ Wayland

Today’s course in Wayland was the toughest course the girls have faced all year. However, they went into the race with the right mindset and brought the kind of toughness required to get it done. We knew going in what we were up against with FHE, who won today, but we weren’t sure what South Christian was going to bring due to how their varsity and jv teams have bounced around a bit this season. With that being said, the girls raced against people, plain and simple, regardless of their jersey color. They raced the course which surely taunted them with it’s challenging hills and multiple loops, and they also raced for each other.

They all did a great job of using the uphills to express their strength, and they were fantastic downhill runners by unlocking their stride, flowing down, and using gravity to their advantage.

Jessica Durkee (20:32) led the team, placing 7th overall, furthering the likelihood of earning All-Conference, while Emelia MacDonald (21:07), again hard charging, finished not too far back placing 10th overall.

Next was Lucy VanDemark (21:35) who was a strong leader in our loosely formed pack in the middle. Behind her was Madison Nagel (22:17) who toughed it out to keep us together, while Holly Velting (22:33) and Lindsey Velting (22:39) provided solid showings to help seal the deal. Meanwhile, Emma Thompson (23:28) ran with a great deal of perseverance and was closing gaps all the way to the end. Freshman Alize Raphael (25:00) had a rough go in her varsity only racing debut, but never gave up, and should be proud of her efforts.

The varsity put together a stellar performance. Although we were missing regular varsity runner Kendall Snyder due to illness, I knew our girls would give it what they had, would step up to the challenge, and we would do what we could and today, it was a solid second.

There was a whole lot happening in the jv race today. Although we were 4th of 4, we had 7 out of our 9 girls earn season or personal records on the day! It was fun to see these girls working so hard. Some of them are young and/or new to the sport and it was like the light went on and they were really racing today, rather than just working hard on the race course.

Kelsey Smith (24:03) led the team with a season record, followed by a very determined Katherine Powers, with a PR of 24:15, and an equally inspired Clare Webster, with a PR of 25:11. Laine Hinton, followed this up with a solid 25:36.

Meanwhile, Anna Benedict was bringing the heat with a PR of 26:09, which I’m thinking may have her thinking about going sub-26 before the season’s end. Marien Gielincki also put down a respectable 26:09.

Senior Megan Bargy looked really solid tonight and nailed a 27:12 season record, and Christel Hoskins put together an inspiring 28:52 PR, with Olivia Landry, who took the hills like a boss, hitting her season record time of 29:11!

It was a good day for girls TKHS cross country. Way to go ladies! As usual, you represented yourselves, our school, and community well.
